For New Hashers

The first rule of Hashing is THERE ARE NO RULES! This rule also applies to anyone who wants to start Hashing. There are no dues and no "joining." Nobody cares how fast or slow you run, what you wear, or what you do for a living. You just need to be over 18 years of age, and it helps if you like running or hiking, and partying. Just find a run and come on out!

Try to get to the starting point about 10 minutes early, it is never a good idea to get to the Hash late... Find the "Hash Cash" who will take down your name (to identify the body later on) and collect your run fee. Let the Hash Cash know that this is your first run, and they will make sure that you get a "first timer" briefing before the run.

Here are a few things you might want to bring along on your first (and subsequent) Hashes:

  • A decent set of running shoes.  But new shoes are not recommended, for a variety of reasons.

  • Your run fee.  The amount will be announced in the invitation for each run, and usually includes the run, transport, beverages/snacks and sometimes even dinner afterwards.  It's also a good idea to pack some extra cash for the Bash party that follows each run.

  • A "run bag."  This can be a gym bag or backpack with all your Hashing equipment, a change or clothes, sweater etc. in it.  You put this in the Hash Car at the beginning of the run and it will be auto-magically transported to the end of the run by the hares.

  • Some dry clothes to change into after the run.  There is an outdoor "Circle" gathering after each run where everyone is outside for anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes after the run, so be sure to pack a jacket that you can put on over your clothes for that.  For winter runs, bring something warm, especially if you are running at night.  It's also a good idea to carry a dry pair of socks -- you never know!

The Suzhou Hash House Harriers is a family club. Children often come on our hashes at their parents discretion. We'd recommend coming along anf checking it out so you can make your own decision about involving them. The whole family IS ALWAYS welcome to join the Bash party after each run-no special invitation needed.
